This article is to provide some basic information about Cart Promotions.

Cart promotions allow you to define not only discounts for products and orders, but also grant coupons, free shipping and free products. Cart promotions are displayed on the Cart and Checkout pages.

To set up a promotion:

1.  Navigate to Marketing > Promotions

2.  Click the + and click 'Add cart promotion'

3.  Name your promotion - Important Note:  The Name of the promotion WILL be displayed in a yellow message box up the top right once the conditions of the promotion are satisfied so it is important to name this appropriately. For example, '20% off your order when you spend over $150!'.

Short Description:  This is optional.  If you wish to enter in some content into this section, this will allow your customers to click on the name of the promotion if they wish to find out more about the promotion.  After clicking the promotion name, this short description will show, so make sure you explain what it's for and why.

4.  Click on the Conditions tab.

5.  Click 'Add condition'.

6.  Click on the downward pointing arrow to bring up a list of all of the possible conditions you can use to determine when a customer will receive the promotion.

The most commonly used are:

  • Order subtotal - If the order subtotal is greater than or equal to a set amount, give a bonus/discount.
  • Coupon code - Customer must enter the coupon code provided to them at the checkout to receive a bonus/discount (usually through some sort of marketing campaign / newsletter subscription).

7.  After you've chosen your conditions for your promotion, click on the Bonuses tab. Once there, click 'Add bonus'.

8.  Click on the downward pointing arrow to bring up a list of all of the possible bonuses you can give to a customer.

The most commonly used are:

  • Order discount - Provide a percentage or a fixed amount to be taken off the total for the order.  Common setups are 10% or 20% off the order total when the order subtotal is over a set amount.
  • Free Shipping - Gives you a choice of which of your shipping methods you would like to provide free shipping for.  Common usage is Free shipping for orders over a set amount ($100 or $150 generally).

After selecting your choices, review the information you have entered into the three sections, General, Conditions and Bonuses and after checking your work, click 'Save' or 'Save and close' to be taken back to the Promotions list.

The most important step is to double check your promotion and if it works as intended!  Try to think of possible loopholes in the promotions' conditions you have selected, and double check if you're providing some sort of discount that the discount is correct - One wrong choice in the Bonuses tab for example, can reduce an order TO $5 instead of reducing the other BY $5.

If you have any specific promotion setups/scenarios you would like to try out on your website, view the other articles in the promotions section first to see if it has already been covered in an article.

If you can't find something that sounds like it will provide you the information you need, send an email to support@magicdust.com.au with your questions and detailed information as to exactly how you want the promotion to run, with what conditions, etc.  The more detail you provide, the better we'll be able to assist you and with less delays.  The less detail you provide, the more likely it will be that the initial response to your email will be a series of questions about the promotion and how it should be setup because you have not provided us enough information to work with.
